Fifteen

Looking at Paulina was like seeing a mirage in the desert after days without water. At first glance, warmth filled my chest from seeing my old friend. The girl I spent most of my life being best friends with. We knew things about one another that no one else on this planet knew. For nearly two decades, she had been my confidant and adventure buddy. The one who held my hair back when I got drunk for the first time. And the one I held when she cried after her mother said disparaging things about her weight. But no matter how much we shared over the years, that closeness I’d once felt with her was now an illusion, tainted by betrayal.

That warmth turned sour as reality sunk in. Could I ever look at her the same way again? Several months had passed since our last run-in at graduation and seeing her now felt just as raw and upsetting as it did then. Like the wound never healed to begin with and someone just ripped my bandage right off, leaving me exposed and vulnerable.

Her mouth popped open a few times to say something, but the way her brows lifted and her gaze kept darting to the left told me she was nervous and unsure of herself.

I should have just turned away. There was nothing more that Paulina deserved from me at this point. I did my due diligence and helped her get back on her feet after she nearly face-planted. Honestly, if I asked Garth or Drema, they’d probably tell me that I should have left her ass on the concrete.

I hated it, but something in me missed her. Not the girl who smeared my name for some bizarre jealousy vendetta. I missed the girl she was before all of that. Before everything got so royally fucked up.

That’s probably why, instead of turning around and finishing my run, I said, “I thought you would be at medical school alre—.”

“Ms. Barnes!” Anthony’s gruff voice sounded from behind me along with his heavy footsteps. The guy was in great shape, but there was nothing he could do to conceal the noise of his six-foot-five frame barreling toward me.

As I turned toward him he asked, “Are you alright? I saw that you almost took a spill.”

“Yes, I’m fine. I’m sorry if I scared you, I wasn’t watching where I was going and then I ran right into…” I paused, not really sure what to call Paulina. She wasn’t exactly my friend anymore, but I couldn’t decide to call her an enemy either. So I settled for her name. “Paulina.”

He didn’t miss a beat as he took her in. Anthony was one of the best at his job and keeping me safe meant knowing my history and Paulina had been a big part of that. He knew exactly who she was and what she’d done. Thankfully, he didn’t let it show on his face as he stepped right next to me.

“I think next time we will need to discuss the quarter-mile rule.
